A 2015 winner of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Vocals Competition, Veronica Swift has been gaining attention throughout the jazz world. The twenty-three-year-old singer has been performing every Saturday night at New York City’s famed Birdland Jazz Club, where she was also recently featured as a special guest with John Pizzarelli. At the Jazz at Lincoln Center, she was a guest with Michael Feinstein and she regularly performs with Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks. Swift is the daughter of the late bebop pianist Hod O’Brien and vocalist Stephanie Nakasian. Swift’s style harkens back to Anita O’Day and June Christie as well as the great vocalese artist, Annie Ross.
Swift will join jazz veteran Benny Green and his trio for a very special evening. When the legendary pianist and composer was Swift’s age, he was a protégé of some of the true icons of jazz: Art Blakey, Ray Brown, Betty Carter, and Freddie Hubbard. Green toured and recorded extensively with them before moving on to become a leader of his own celebrated trio, a band he continues to lead today. With Swift, Green pays it forward by mentoring her as his teachers did many years ago.
Benny Green is a consummate jazz pianist. He’s mastered all the past styles from Kansas City stride to Bill Evans to bebop and beyond.
