Accordion-wielding Pascuala Ilabaca is a favorite on the new scene of young Chilean singer-songwriters. Her music is rooted in traditional sounds, informed by a colorful childhood moving from Barcelona to Chile, Mexico to India, and back again. Taking cues from Violeta Parra and Janis Joplin, Ilabaca exudes a unique stage presence that conjures up both sweetness and empowerment, with song lyrics focused on distinctly positive messages of feminism, anti-violence, and cultural heritage. Her formidable band Fauna is made up of accordion, keyboard, sax, clarinet, percussion, bass, and guitar.
Ilabaca and Fauna’s music is varied and meaningful.
