Explore rare instruments as they are brought to life with sound, including a self-playing Yamaha Disklavier, an eleven-foot-tall octobasse, and a one-of-a-kind visible organ.

Octobasse Demonstration
11:00–11:15 a.m.
This exceptionally large bowed string instrument, one of only seven in the world, will be played live by Richard D. Walter, PhD, MIM’s curator for United States / Canada and Europe.

“Apollonia” Orchestrion Demonstration
Noon and 3:00 p.m.
Stop by the Mechanical Music Gallery as MIM’s “Apollonia” orchestrion dance organ plays popular international tunes.

Yamaha Disklavier Performance
Noon–1:00 p.m.
Watch in awe as this high-tech player piano performs completely on its own, replicating performances recorded on other Disklaviers around the world.

Mechanical Instrument Demonstrations
1:15–1:45 p.m.
Hear the unique sounds and see the inner workings of MIM’s fascinating mechanical instruments, including the Tangley Model A-43 calliope, Regina Style No. 33 music box, and Violano Virtuoso self-playing violin and piano.

Visible Organ Performance
2:30–2:45 p.m.
Listen to MIM’s custom-made visible organ played by Natalie Mealey, doctoral candidate at Arizona State University’s School of Music. Through this unique organ’s glass, catch a glimpse of the pipes, bellows, and action normally hidden from view.
