Childs is an inventive composer and arranger whose efforts in those areas consistently expand the dimensions of the jazz genre—and beyond.
—Los Angeles Times
Jazz pianist and composer Billy Childs is one of the most diversely prolific and acclaimed musicians working today. Childs’s canon of original compositions and arrangements has garnered him numerous accolades, including the 2013 Doris Duke Artist Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2009, a music award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2015, and a Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Grant in 2019. Childs has received 16 Grammy nominations and won five awards, most recently in 2017, when Rebirth won the Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. He also won a Grammy for Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals in 2015 for “New York Tendaberry,” which featured Renée Fleming and Yo-Yo Ma, from his acclaimed release Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro.
In August 2020, he returned to the quartet configuration with Acceptance, a follow-up to Rebirth.
