A country throwback, an old-fashioned honky-tonker, with a twist.
—New York Times
Junior Brown is an American original with a unique voice, unique songwriting, and a unique double-necked guitar. After discovering a guitar in his grandparents’ attic, Brown spent years woodshedding with records and the radio before in the late 1960s exploring the passion for the music he loved.
One night in the 1980s, struggling to plug and unplug his guitar and lap steel while singing during shows, Brown had a dream about the two instruments melding into one. The result was the “Guit-Steel,” a double-necked instrument combining a standard electric guitar with a full-sized lap steel guitar. Built by Michael Stevens of Stevens Electric Instruments, the “Guit-Steel” lets Brown switch instruments quickly mid-song, and while singing.
His playing matured around the same time and coincided with the development of his signature songwriting style, which employs subtle, dry wit in some songs, where others are more overtly humorous or just plain dead serious. He is adept at playing a wide range of styles—including country, rock ’n’ roll, blues, Hawaiian, bluegrass, and Western swing—that, when, combined can only spell Junior Brown.
