Twice named Female Vocalist of the Year by the Country Music Association, Kathy Mattea established herself in the late 1980s and 1990s as a masterful “songcatcher” with a keen sense of songs and songwriting and as an artist at ease with both country tradition and free-ranging innovation. Mattea has enjoyed much success and acclaim during her 35-year career in country, bluegrass, and folk music—she was won two Grammys and four Country Music Association awards, landed four number-one country singles, and released five albums that have been certified gold (plus a platinum greatest hits collection). She is involved in public broadcasting: she consulted on and contributed to Ken Burns’s 2019 PBS documentary Country Music, and in 2021 she replaced founder Larry Groce as the host of the long-running NPR show Mountain Stage.
